How to Troubleshoot Common Air Conditioner Problems

How to Troubleshoot Common Air Conditioner Problems
Summers in Alberta can get surprisingly hot, with temperatures in Edmonton regularly hitting 30 degrees C or higher. Under these conditions, a reliable air conditioner is necessary for maintaining home comfort and safety. Yet, even the best systems stumble at times.
Before you call Hydro-Flo Plumbing & Heating, learn about troubleshooting home air conditioner problems on your own. Here are nine common issues and how to fix each one—no HVAC training required.
1. System Refuses to Turn On
If your system appears unresponsive:
- Confirm that the thermostat is set to “Cool” and the fan is on “Auto.” It’s easy to forget to switch back to cooling mode after a short-lived cold snap.
- Inspect the breaker panel or fuse box for a tripped breaker or blown fuse that may be preventing the AC from kicking on.
- Locate the outdoor disconnect switch near the condenser. It may have tripped during lawn care or power fluctuations.
2. Airflow Feels Weak or Non-Existent
If you can hear the AC running, but the vents produce very little air:
- Check and replace the filter if it appears dirty. Dust buildup restricts airflow, reduces cooling, and forces the unit to work harder. From now on, set a reminder to check the filter once a month.
- Remove furniture, rugs, or curtains that may be obstructing vents. Proper air distribution requires unimpeded flow from all return and supply registers.
- Inspect visible ductwork in the basement or attic. Reseal any loose connections using foil tape. Despite the misleading name, duct tape is not suitable for sealing ductwork because it degrades quickly.
- Switch off the power at the circuit breaker and gently clean the blower compartment. Dusty motors or blades can reduce airflow and efficiency.
3. Air Blows Out Warm
If the system is running, but air feels more lukewarm than ice-cold:
- Lower the thermostat a few degrees and make sure it’s set to “Cool.” If the fan is “On,” it will circulate air without cooling it.
- Try replacing the filter. A dirty filter restricts airflow to the evaporator coil, which reduces cooling efficiency and may cause the coil to freeze. If this happens, heat transfer cannot occur. Allow the coil to thaw completely, then replace the filter before turning the system back on.
- Trim back nearby vegetation and remove debris clinging to the outdoor condenser, such as leaves, grass, and cobwebs. Proper pruning and a rinse with a garden hose helps the unit “breathe,” allowing it to cool more efficiently.
4. Cooling Varies from Room to Room
If some rooms feel significantly warmer than others:
- Make sure all registers are open and unblocked, and open the doors between rooms to allow for airflow.
- Inspect exposed ductwork for crushed or disconnected sections. Fix these, if possible.
- Look into adding insulation or installing balancing dampers to equalize comfort in rooms with large windows or vaulted ceilings.
5. Indoor Unit Leaks Water
If a pool of water appears near the indoor unit:
- Inspect the drain pan for cracks. Replace it if damaged.
- Examine the condensate line to determine whether that’s the problem. If so, disconnect the line and clear it using a wet-dry vacuum or flexible plumbing snake.
- Check the evaporator coil for ice. If you see any, turn off the system and allow the ice to thaw. You can speed up the process with a hairdryer. Once restored, replace the filter and restart cautiously.
6. Strange Noises During Operation
If the noise level spikes when the AC cycles on or off:
- Tighten the panels and screws on the indoor and outdoor units. Vibration from cooling cycles can loosen these components.
- Lubricate or replace worn blower belts. Squeaks or scrapes often originate from mechanical parts that require routine upkeep.
- Listen for hissing noises around the coils, which could indicate that refrigerant is escaping. Turn off the system immediately to prevent further damage until a professional can repair the leak and recharge the system.
7. Breakers Keep Tripping
If the AC trips the breaker every time it turns on:
- Replace the air filter to improve airflow and reduce the electrical demand on your system.
- Reset the breaker and monitor it for the next few cooling cycles. Persistent tripping points to wiring issues or a problematic compressor, both of which require professional attention.
- Keep notes on when the breaker trips and the outside temperature at that time. Patterns can help HVAC and electrical professionals determine if heat load or electrical faults are to blame.
8. Thermostat Isn’t Responding
If the settings don’t match the expected results:
- Replace the batteries and check the calibration. Faulty readings may cause over- or under-cooling.
- Confirm compatibility with your HVAC system, especially if you have a dual-fuel or multi-stage setup.
- Swap in a programmable or smart thermostat to enhance control and help prevent common air conditioner problems.
9. System Cycles On and Off Constantly
If the AC starts, stops, and restarts every few minutes:
- Check your air filter. A dirty filter may restrict airflow so much that the system overheats, triggering an early shutdown.
- Inspect the thermostat placement. If it’s near a heat source, like the stove or a sunny window, it may misread the room temperature and cause premature cycling.
- Ensure all your vents are open and unblocked. Improper airflow throws off the balance, straining the system and causing unnecessary cycling.
