There’s a Burning Smell Coming from the Furnace
Author: Hydro-Flo
A burning smell coming from the furnace can indicate a couple of different issues. A brief dusty odour when the heat starts after months of inactivity, for example, is a normal part of early winter – whereas a sharp smell of melting plastic needs to be addressed right away.
Pay attention to when the smell appears, whether it fades and whether the furnace seems to be functioning normally. You do not need to identify a failed part yourself. These observations help us decide what to investigate.
If there is smoke, visible fire or an immediate danger, leave and call 911. A rotten-egg smell may indicate a gas leak: leave without operating electrical switches and contact your gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from a safe location.
Dust on Hot Components Can Cause a Burning Smell
During Edmonton’s warmer months, your furnace may sit idle while dust settles on its internal parts. When heating resumes, dust on hot surfaces can produce an odour that travels through the vents. This smell is generally associated with the first seasonal startup and should fade after a day or so.
Restricted Airflow Can Cause Overheating
Your furnace needs moving air to carry heat into your home. A heavily clogged filter, blocked return grille or another airflow restriction can interfere with that process.
When the system cannot move air properly, temperatures can rise where they should not. Protective controls may stop the burners, and some airflow problems can contribute to an overheated blower motor. The furnace may produce an unusual smell alongside weaker airflow or interrupted heating.
A Motor, Wiring or Control Board May be Overheating
The blower motor circulates heated air through your home. If it overheats or develops an electrical fault, it can produce a burning odour. Wiring and other electrical components can also be involved.
A failing control board is another possibility. The board manages the furnace’s operating sequence, so a fault may affect startup or burner operation as well as produce an odour.
