New National Heat Pump Rebate Announced

November 2, 2026

There’s good news for Edmonton homeowners considering an energy-efficient heating upgrade- the Government of Canada has announced a new National Heat Pump Rebate, offering eligible households $2,000 or up to $10,000 toward qualifying heat pump installations.

The initiative is part of a $2 billion federal investment announced October 8, 2026, to support home energy retrofits across Canada. At Hydro-Flo Plumbing & Heating, we’re excited to share what this announcement means for homeowners considering heat pump installation in Edmonton.

Importantly, homeowners may already be able to qualify for a future rebate on installations completed on or after November 1, 2026.

How Much Is the New Heat Pump Rebate?

The National Heat Pump Rebate is intended to help up to 820,000 Canadian households install eligible cold-climate heat pumps.

According to the Government of Canada’s official announcement, rebate amounts will depend on household income and equipment costs:

  • $2,000: For eligible households above the median-income threshold.
  • Up to $10,000: For eligible households at or below the applicable median-income threshold.

For example, Alberta’s after-tax household income threshold for a family of four is $145,019. Households at or below this amount may qualify for the higher rebate, subject to program requirements.

Unlike previous federal energy programs, the new rebate will not require an energy audit before or after installation.

When Can Edmonton Homeowners Apply?

The application portal is expected to open in early 2027. However, the government has introduced a retroactive eligibility period beginning November 1, 2026. This means eligible homeowners who purchase and install a qualifying heat pump before applications officially open may still receive funding later.

To qualify during this period, homeowners must meet several requirements:

  • Install a heat pump appearing on the federal eligible products list.
  • Purchase the equipment from an HVAC contractor and have it professionally installed.
  • Own the property receiving the installation.
  • Retain detailed receipts showing equipment models, AHRI identification numbers and installation costs.
  • Submit the required application and receipts within the program’s deadlines.

Both planned replacements and emergency installations may qualify. Homeowners do not necessarily need to remove their existing furnace.

Funding is not guaranteed. Applications must be approved once the program opens, and eligibility rules remain subject to change.

Are Heat Pumps Suitable for Edmonton Winters?

Modern cold-climate heat pumps are designed to provide efficient heating even during freezing temperatures. They also provide air conditioning during summer. However, Edmonton’s extreme winter conditions make equipment selection particularly important.

Depending on your home’s insulation, existing heating system and energy costs, a cold-climate heat pump or hybrid system combining a heat pump with a gas furnace may be appropriate.

A heat pump can improve efficiency, but switching from natural gas does not automatically guarantee lower heating bills.
