Furnace is Running but the House is Cold

Has your furnace been running all day, but the temperature on the thermostat barely moved? Unlike a furnace that blows cold air or keeps shutting off, this one appears to be producing heat. The question is whether enough of that heat is reaching the rooms that need it.

If your furnace runs but the house stays cold, our furnace repair team in Edmonton can check both the equipment and how warm air moves through your home.

Compare the Air Coming from Your Vents

Check a few vents in different rooms while the furnace is running. Does the air feel warm at all of them? Is the flow noticeably weaker upstairs or at the far end of the house?

A blocked or disconnected duct can keep heat from reaching part of a home, even when the furnace itself is working. Closed vents, furniture over return air grilles and a clogged filter can also affect circulation. Note which rooms feel cold so we can investigate the pattern rather than assuming the furnace is the only issue.

Check Where the Thermostat Is Reading

Your thermostat measures the temperature in one location. If that spot warms up faster than the rest of the house, the furnace may shut off while distant rooms still feel cold. If the thermostat is in a colder area, the furnace may run for a long time trying to satisfy it.

Tell us whether the thermostat reaches its set temperature and whether other rooms feel the same. We can compare that reading with conditions elsewhere in the home and check whether the heating cycles match what the thermostat is requesting.

How Does the Furnace Perform on the Coldest Days?

Does the furnace keep the house comfortable most of the winter but fall behind during an Edmonton cold snap? Or is it struggling even on milder days? That difference matters.

When outdoor temperatures drop, your home loses heat faster and the furnace has to run longer. A long cycle is not automatically a problem. If indoor temperatures continue to fall while the furnace runs, though, we need to check its heat output and airflow. We would also consider whether changes to the home, such as an addition or altered ductwork, have affected how the system performs.

Let us know how long the problem has been happening, which rooms are cold and whether the furnace ever reaches the thermostat setting. We’ll inspect the system, explain what is limiting the heat and recommend a repair if one is needed.
